Stock Photography

What is stock photography ? They are photographs that are made available for sale to be used commercially or privately by individuals that can be purchased from stock photography websites. Stock images are cheaper than to commission a photographer.

The photographs that are purchased can have various applications, they can be used for marketing, design and advertising purposes to name but a few. Many graphic designers that work for advertising companies these days make use of stock photo libraries as it is cheaper to buy the picture than commission a photographer to go out and shoot what you are looking for. More often than not, the stock photography website will have exactly what you are looking for.

The two most common licenses that involve stock images today are "royalty-free" and "rights-managed". "Royalty-free" means you have permission to use the stock image a couple of times. "Rights-managed" means you must pay for each time you use the image from the stock photography library you purchased the image from.
